see sky
Whether you catch a bright full moon rising or dark starry skies under a new moon, the sky possibilities are endless under the preserve’s protected 360° skies.
We’ve highlighted some key dates below in the categories of new moon (dark skies), full moon (bright skies), meteor showers, and solstices.
TIP No matter what day you stay, you’re likely to catch an incredible sunset and sunrise. The change in sky hue within a 24 hour period is an attraction in itself!
new moon
Some of the darkest skies and best star watching opportunities can be found around the time of the new moon.
On clear dark nights, the milky way can be seen with the naked eye!
TIP You can still enjoy dark skies on any night with a moon, just look for a date when the moon is not risen during the evening hours.
full moon
Enjoy an illuminated campground and extended “daylight” around the time of the full moon rising and surrounding days.
One of the most stunning experiences are occurances where the moon rises on one horizon while the sun sets on the other!
TIP To get the most out of your full moon experience, look up the time the moon rises and sets on the date of your stay.
meteor showers
Between May – October, there are multiple chances to catch a meteor showers, ideally viewed on dark sky nights.
While showers span across many days and even weeks, there are peak days where chances to see multiples are higher.
Eta Aquarids Meteor Shower
Active April 15 – May 27
Peak May 5 + 6
Perseids Meteor Shower
Active July 17 – August 24
Peak August 11 + 12
Draconids Meteor Shower
Active October 6 – 10
Peak October 7 + 8
Orionids Meteor Shower
Active October 2 – November 7
Peak October 20 + 21
TIP Some showers are most prominent in the early morning hours, so do your homework and know when and where in the sky to look!
summer solstice
The summer solstice occurs when the earth’s tilt toward the sun is at a maximum; the sun is at is highest point in the sky and it is the longest day of the year.
The sun shines directly on the northern hemisphere and indirectly on the southern, and south of the equator enters the winter season while north of the equator enters summer season.
june 20, 2:50 PM
TIP On the summer solstice, the day length is 14h 33′, a stark contrast from the winter solstice at 9h 46′. Long summer days = more fun!
look up
We’ve just scratched the surface! There’s at least 28 other fun sky occurances beteween May – October not listed above.
Any day is a good day under the big New Mexico sky. Time to brush up on your astronomy and get exploring!
